Friendship Breakup
A Poem
You know me,
I know you—
At least, I thought I did.
Then you turned on me,
Not all at once
But little by little
Until you were gone
From my life.
I didn’t notice at first
You didn’t care;
You didn’t hate me,
You just weren’t there.
I didn’t see at first
How much it hurt me;
I just withdrew,
Making friends anew
But never keeping them,
Never cherishing them
Like I know I should
Because you did not cherish me
Like we know you should.
Tracing this pain
All back to you
It hurts more now
Than it did back then
Because I realize one hurtful truth:
I don’t know you—
And you don’t know me.

I'm of the opinion that some friendship breakups are harder than romantic breakups. This was beautifully done and full of shock and sadness.
So relateable in so many ways, you really captured the essence of the slow demise. And it always leaves a kind of shellshock before the envelope of sadness. Beautifully written as always 🤍
Your writing style is so captivating
You captured a sad but inevitable slice of life. Nicely done 😊
This hit me so hard because I've experienced it. Sometimes friendship breakups are wayyyyy more painful than romantic ones. Loved your poem!
Oooof I know that experience. This part especially was powerful “Like we know you should”…❤️
This is sad - and also kind of just...one of those things I think we can all recognise
I can relate to this!
Very nicely written! It’s true, sometimes we don’t even know the person who we think we do.
This is a great poem… I really felt it x
