Fossilized.

Undeniable.

imprinted on rock,

an ancient canvas

bears secrets of earth

kept hidden to herself

between compressed

layers of time.

giants lived, ruled,

survived…

the feathered and the gargantuan,

the horned and the aquatic,

the tame and the timid.

together, comingled

on this blue

playground.

most were herbivores,

some were carnivores;

cold-blooded assassins

with hearts as frigid

as tundra.

the majority

lost to hellfire

in the end.

*

survival of the fittest?

perfectly relevant.

yet, a concept

misconstrued among

contemporary

brutes...

nature's furies

can't

be reasoned with.

they are lessons

taught

to us of our own

inferiority.

*

the awe-struck

story of

archeology

began with

curious minds

searching for

new mysteries.

it ended with

great respect

for the longevity

and diversity of

creation.

in the next age,

after smithereens

has yet again

delivered the

finishing touch,

i wonder who

or what,

will unearth

fossils of our

existence.

Well-wrought! I've often wondered the same myself. What will people of the future make of some of the artifacts we leave behind? How will they interpret a Dali print or painting, for instance, if it can still be seen, with no background information? Love this!

    Ohhhhh that last line!!!!

  • L.C. Schäfer2 years ago

I love those final lines, and the directions it pushes us to think in 😁

I love what you did here Lamar!! That ending stanza was bone chilling!!! But I wonder what of our civilization will be left to uncover and by what means we will cease to exist??? 🤔

Really well done! I felt the weight of our existence in those lines. This was a stand-out piece, Lamar :)

  • "nature's furies can't be reasoned with. they are lessons taught to us of our own inferiority." These lines were so powerful, profound and true! And yes, I wonder who would be the ones to dig up our fossils. Maybe a species that hasn't walked the earth before. Loved your poem!

Awesome poem! I loved the structure of it, draws the reader right through!

This is excellent! The formatting was like ridges of a dinosaur back! It transitioned so effectively from study of fossils of the past to pondering those that might be discovered in the future

Wonderful challenge entry, Lamar. Loved the build up to the twist at the finish!

A cascade of clever, canny thoughts in a humbly humane tone. Well done!
