Forsaken
For Letters to the Moon
Dear moon,
Where were you?
Where were you when the darkness came
And swallowed up the sun,
Tempered the firmament,
And left me too cold to fear the night?
Could you see me?
Did you watch when I, unseen,
Sought comfort in not seeing?
In not knowing whether the waters were rising or receding?
In handing it over to fate?
I thought you my friend once,
When I was young.
The night was older, even than you, but I'd seen only enough
To think the thing a toy, a game I could master with spunk and vain bravado,
And you a thing of beauty,
My sister.
Goddess of all the sisters,
United in waste and pain and the endless cycle of loss
I had read was the grandeur of living.
I did not know then that yours is a mirrored light
And mine a mirrored love,
And that beneath my storied love
You were barren and cold as glass.
You made no bones about it, the fault is my own.
I mistook indifference for a steady hand
And held mine up until my fingers turned white
And thought it your light in my palm.

Goddess of all sisters is a magnificent line. I love how you have woven knowledge with maturity in your poem without negating the magic felt in your youth. Wonderful piece. Congrats on placing in the challenge. Richly deserved. I’m so sorry I missed this the first time round!
Hannah, this hits so hard... It's no wonder you placed runner-up in the letters to the moon challenge!! Congrats Hannah!!!
Wooohooooo congratulations on your win! 🎉💖🎊🎉💖🎊
Your use of celestial imagery beautifully mirrors the speaker’s emotional landscape, creating a sense of awe and isolation simultaneously. The interplay of light and shadow conveys vulnerability with remarkable precision.
'I mistook indifference for a steady hand' what a STELLAR line Hannah! Excellent take on the prompt!
Wow, that’s hauntingly beautiful and raw. The imagery of mirrored light and mirrored love? Absolutely stunning. It’s sorrow with elegance. ✨
Always stunning
That is a STRONG ending
Wonderful work as usual.
Omgggg, those last three lines hit me so hard! Your poem was so poignant and beautiful. Loved it so much!
Beautiful, Hannah. "Yours a mirrored light, and mine a mirrored love."I love the way you state the barrenness beneath surface beauty. A tremendous entry,!
