Forgotten Substance

Life is found when you look

Life’s substance forgotten, drowned out, lost

In the noise of every soul screaming

To be heard but refusing to listen.

We ask “What is Truth?” but don’t really

Want to pursue it, addicted to being fed by

Our news feed, making truth forever elusive.

Black Lives Matter vs All Lives Matter,

Pro-Mask vs Anti-Mask,

Pro-Vaxx vs Anti-Vaxx,

Capitalist vs Communist.

Choose one and the rest is determined,

No other options. Just ask Facebook —

They predict your thoughts from a single post.

But it doesn’t have to be that way.

Nuance, diversity, simplicity, complexity,

All charged to make life beautiful,

A reminder to marvel at the little things.

The morning cup of coffee,

The single ray of sunlight on a cloudy day,

The changing colors of the season,

The nostalgia of summer,

The whistling of the wind,

The wild flowers of spring,

The photo of childhood you forgot about...

And suddenly you realize that substance

Has been with you all along.

You just had to pause and see it.
