Floppy Jo

And His Rusty Orange Socks

By Kelli Sheckler-AmsdenPublished about a year ago 2 min read
Top Story - November 2024

rusty orange knitted socks

snugly fit on fuzzy toes

his mama liked to call him flops

his papa called him jo

*

jo jo like to hop around

but the snow made his toes nippy

so mama grabbed her knitting down

whipped them up in just a jiffy

*

now, floppy jo showed off his socks

he was as proud as he could be

he wore them everywhere he went

so that everyone could see

*

one day while he was going on

about how great his sock were

without warning, they were gone

happened so fast, it was a blur

*

he went crying home to mama

and papa helped him look

they found a stranger in pajamas

with no question what he took

*

he was wearin' floppy's sockies

he knew they knew, but didn't care

the criminals name was rocky

and rocky, was a bear

*

no-one had the courage

to meet rocky eye to eye

the whole town was discouraged

as the snow began to fly

*

but little naïve floppy jo

stepped up and said to that ol' bear

you've got my socks on, don't you know

rocky responded, i don't care

*

they're on my feet, so now they're mine

ain't nothing you can do

but jo jo looked at him and smiled

and said, i've got something just for you

*

he shoved his hand into his pack

the bear was ready for a duel

flops pulled his hand out, with a snap

with a pair of bear paw shoes

*

he handed them to rocky

said i think these might fit you better

besides your feet are kind of stocky

and my socks don't match your sweater

*

rocky smiled down on flops

as he pulled those sockies off

those shoes fit rocky like a top

he whispered in a voice real soft

*

thank you so much floppy jo

i'm sorry i was naughty

jo said, i understand it though

these socks can rock a party

*

from that day on, around the clock

you couldn't separate the two

jo jo in his favorite socks

and rocky, rockin' his own shoes

Such a sweet poem, Kelli. This reminds me of my youngest daughter's favorite stuffie from childhood, her rabbit she called Leroy. Heartwarming and a lovely throwback to simple days. Congrats on top story!

This is so cute, very reminiscient of the childrens poetry my mother used to read to me.

I genuinely wasn't expecting a whole story in a poem, but I read it top to bottom and there it was.
