Memories Of My Father

Early morning Saturday

My dad and I

Closing our door quietly

So as not to disturb our family.

*

Mist hanging gently in the summer air

The early morning chill

Still bodes well for a warm spell

And a beautiful day.

*

The house of girls

My sisters and mum still asleep

The two men of the family

Make our quiet escape.

*

So proud to be walking

Alongside this giant of a man

So warm and tender

I will forever love my dad.

*

Fishing rods over shoulders

Lunch bags at our sides

This quality time we spend together

I’ll remember all of my life.

*

At the riverbank

Sitting on the cool grass

The clear blue water

Rushing past.

*

Neither of us had fished before

But that didn’t matter

We gave it a try and laughed with each other

And talked like men, he and I.

*

Sandwiches at the riverbank

Best laid plans come to naught

Our spirits remain high

And we smile a lot.

*

We pack our kit and shoulder our rods

At the end of our joyful day

When we finally arrive home

We tell tales of the fish that got away

My dad and I.
