My wife asked me to sit down
So she could look at the map
Her path started at the empty plains
Growing year by year with each birth
Traced deep grooves filled
With graduations, driving lessons,
Unrealized dreams
Conducted a close study
On the inexorable deforestation
Perpetrated by a curly headed heathen
Should I just shave it all?
No, she laughs
This map will fade soon enough
Let’s follow it as long as we can
Through all the life we’ve led
And when there’s only an empty sheet
I’ll close my eyes, trace the memories
Etched into our souls

Beautiful work, Shaun! Depth and introspection delivered so subtly and smoothly!
So lovely and layered I had to read it twice 😁
Taking the metaphor of having "life mapped out" and giving it a new spin. I like it.
This is really touching; I love how you used the map as a way to show the journey of life and all the memories. The ending is so sweet and kind of bittersweet like a reminder to appreciate every moment while we can.
Wow beautifully written ♥︎
