facing trauma

they should tell you

By Judey Kalchik Published 2 years ago 1 min read

they don’t tell you that it gets harder

when you decide now is the time

to dig, and dig deep.

-

to be prepared for the tears

and sleepless nights to continue

and grow more frequent.

-

you start so things will get better

calmer, make room for forgiveness

experience gratitude for the journey

but.

-

they should tell you that old scripts

are etched in bone and completing the words

is a habit that’s as comfortable as it is distasteful.

-

they should tell you that new looks

uncover old truths that you’ve not dared to see

now; make room for them as you reorder your reflection.

-

they should tell you

it takes time

don’t stop

"old scripts are etched in bone." bout lost it with this line. i felt the bark beetles in my body Get To Work. woof. wouldn't say i'm a fan of bessel van der kolk. generally more of an unimpressed but curious layman who read "the body keeps the score" because the title told me i had to before i knew anything about the author. pretty sure he's a misogynist... *checks reddit* yes. anywho, i bring it up simply because that title always stuck with me and has struck me now while reading your sagacious words. particularly the line above. i appreciate the reminder that healing takes time and effort, but also that it is worth it. thanks for always showing your work, judey.

those 4th and 5th stanzas are so right on. and that "it takes time don't stop" is powerful. beautifully written!

Judey, this one stings a little!! It reminded me of this thing I came across the other day... This person was quoted saying (paraphrasing here) "You don't work through trauma so that you get over those motions. You work through it so that you can start to feel them and learn to deal with them." This felt like that and hit so much harder!!! Great piece here!! Hope you are okay, here if you need anything!! 💚
