Eyes Wide Open
Her innocence a thing of the past

She looks back and feels the pain,
The tears and years wasted,
Her heart shattered and tattered,
And wondered and pondered the why of it all.
******
Was it a total waste of time,
A foolish choice of the heart,
Or did it all happen for a reason,
A lesson chosen at the start?
******
She has no idea,
Because she knows it didn’t kill her, nor make her stronger,
As the saying goes.
No, it destroyed her, broke her, smashed her to smithereens!
******
It’s the reason she lives life so guarded,
Hyper-aware and searching for the red flags,
No longer ignorant; she walks away at the first sign of trouble,
Preferring solitude over the falsehoods sprouted from lying lips.
******
It’s why she doesn’t love easily or quickly,
And trust is no longer freely gifted,
No, it needs to be earned; consistently,
With actions matching words.
******
It’s the resulting high walls that need to be scaled,
Before anyone can gain any form of access,
Proving that disrupting her peace is worthy,
Enough so she’ll sacrifice the time she spends alone.
******
For she has made a promise she’ll forever keep,
A promise to herself,
Her innocence has been taken, eyes are now wide open,
For this is the last time; she’ll never let it fucking happen again!
About the Creator
Colleen Millsteed
My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
