I’ve been called many things in my lifetime,
Some complimentary, some not so,
But I pick and choose those that I allow to define me,
And softly let the other names go.
**
There’s pretty — but sorry, I don’t agree,
Or stubborn — yes, that ones definitely me,
Crazy — okay, at times I’ll wear that as a second skin,
But my favourite has to be ‘witch’ - that one describes me to a tee.
**
It’s a mantle I’ll wear happily,
Even though it’s one often used in scorn,
But I believe it defines who I am, deep within my core,
Gifted to me on the day I was born.
**
My definition of a witch,
‘A strong, independent, intelligent woman — a threat’,
To who? Well, to the one who labelled me so,
Seems I’m a threat to their ego, that’s why they’re upset!
**
This crown is usually awarded upon the finish line,
One I crossed in first place,
The loser back there somewhere on the track,
The one who lost the race.
**
So, I’ll wear the title with pride,
Stand tall under the gift they bestowed,
An alchemist who has caused them to lose face,
As they’ve tried to pull the wool over my eyes; right under my nose.
**
They picked a fight they couldn’t win,
Threw out, what they perceived, as the ultimate insult,
Shocked at the haughty smile that graced my face,
Because they expected a far different result.

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.

I'll be honoured if someone calls me a witch hehehehe. Loved your poem!
I love this! Can I be a witch with you? Well start a coven!
An apt title accompanied by a marvelous defense of it. It used to be when someone tried to insult me I would simply say, "Thanks!" When they asked, "What for?" I would respond, "The fact that you deigned to speak to me at all is an acknowledgement of my existence & so much more than I thought I could ever expect from you." I like yours even better.
