Even Here, Even Now

A Sensory Poem

Even as the solitary gull catches my eye, sailing through soft gray light beyond the third-floor window,

Even while twelve dollars of beef and onion hoagie linger on my tongue, muted by the hard-to-swallow bitterness of an unpaid lunch break,

Even here, where the sterile office air flattens all scents into vague, clean, nothingness,

Even now, with bent back aching, and head itchy from second-hand headphones,

A song enters my ears, and forges with tender word and lilting melody a path straight to the depths of my yearning, human heart.

AUTHOR'S NOTE:

This poem was inspired by a strong emotional response I had when listening to this particular song at work the other day. I think it is the most beautiful arrangement of one of the most achingly beautiful songs I've ever encountered. Hearing those soaring melodies, while watching a lone bird wheel around in the clouds outside...it took me to a deeply special place. I hope you enjoy it too!

I resonate with that moment of transcendence that you word-paint here so well -- sensory-induced, but beyond sense. You transmute the mundane into pure longing. I'm so glad this poem was recognized with a win!

Ah, Gabriel, you are a poetic master with this one. I remembered you were the one who got a shout-out for this awesome challenge on the challenge page and dunno how I missed this one. It's the perfect example of how music can reach in and grab us and pull at us, regardless of what may be interfering with our mind, body and soul! Love it!

Music is the catalyst that unleashes our souls, allowing them to soar to heights previously unknown or undiscovered. At least, that’s what music is to me - I can imagine no life without it. Beautiful, mystically appealing music accompanied by heartfelt, lovely words. Well done.

Music can do that. Well done, Gabriel.
