The Taste of Goodbye

A Sensory Poem

By Gabriel HuizengaPublished about a year ago Updated about a year ago 1 min read
Original Artwork

Slowly cresting the hill again, red tail lights glimmer and sparkle in the pavement.

Softer by the second, the crunching roll of tires on gravel subsides to the whispers of a misty rain on grass.

Sensing the new vacancy, a deep, rich petrichor invites itself over.

For the first time in a while, warm moisture revisits the ground, the air, and your upturned face.

And then tight, bitter, and familiar, it swells in your throat once more: the taste of goodbye.

I see Cindy has got there before me but extra bonus points from me for "petrichor". What a word. Thanks for taking me with you again. I feel that a lot when I read your work, like I'm a passenger on Gabriel's magic carpet (not Disney's Aladdin, more Arabian Nights).

My newest and most favorite word of the day: petrichor! I really loved this sensory poem and could literally feel, taste, hear, see, and smell everything described. So masterfully done!
