Escape for the Condemned

A poetic examination of suffering.

Deep inside the walls where man goes to suffer

Our poor and wretched souls have no escape from pain

The howls of the dammed ring in the ears of all who enter

It's driven each to the point of being insane

-

We drag into our nightmares the things we cannot control

Memories of all that went wrong and the lines we did cross

Carrying with us the torments of which we can't let go

Things regretted and all the loss

-

One by one, the wretched and the dammed will walk through the gate

Only they can help themselves to escape the fires

But none are left with the strength to escape the tortures in the pit

For they have been forsaken by their deniers

-

Not everyone is going to rise

Many are doomed only to fall

If not for the belief of those in the world around them

They might have made a different call

-

Decisions of the mortal plane are made for the condemned

From birth, they didn't know they were already the forsaken

Their souls were dammed to an eternity in a hell not of their creation

At the moment of their first tears, and all the roads they have taken

-

No choice but what they are given by the world around them

No chance to be what they had the potential of becoming

They were dammed from day one to burn in the pits of man's folly

For some are doomed during their being, doomed to be in the nothing

-

The gates never slammed on one so unworthy and alone as the wretched

They are simply there to suffer for all that they have wrought

And the burning they feel, the anger, pain, and regret of life

No matter how hard, their suffering stories cannot be forgot

-

Should you be the condemned and forsaken of mankind

Do not forget to give the devil his due

For in the truest sense of the word so strong

There's only one devil toruturing in hell, and the devil is you

Wow! Such a gripping poem. I like the structure and the surprising end. It reminds me of a song I've done with choirs, called, "That's What the Devil Said."

  • "We drag into our nightmares the things we cannot control." Incredible line, gave me chills. Very well done!
