Embers

For "The Last Flame" Challenge

She used to speak with the trees

and flowers in bloom.

She danced through the fields

and never even knew

there’s evil in the world,

there is suffering,

and pain,

there are people who hurt you

purely in vain.

.

She only knew fire

as a source of warmth,

as show for the eyes,

as arrows in a storm.

.

Many years went by

and her world grew bigger.

She learned the rampant lies

steal colour from her vigor.

And the gates of home

were there no more,

she now stood alone

amid fires and war.

.

The first time she got burnt

was followed by tears.

It was then when she learned

not everyone cares.

But the rain of apologies

made it all good,

‘til she was on her knees,

while the roaring torch stood.

.

Over the years she learned

about the dangers of world,

that even tiny spark stings,

and steam too can burn.

But nothing prepared her

for the chaos to come.

Masked as sugary lies,

he soaked her in gasoline

and whispered the flame to life

with his venomous tongue.

.

This too is in the past now

more years have flown by.

She lives by the vow

she growled through the cries

while mending her charred heart,

she buried the girl,

hid her under the scars

to keep her from torture

and pains of the world.

.

Now her tongue’s made of ember,

it glows in the dark.

She sings with the thunder

and not on a rainbow’s arc.

.

Approach her unarmed

with intentions sincere,

you’ll be wrapped in the warmth,

poured over with cheer.

Yet turn up belligerent,

behind combative glance,

you’ll be torn up and bent,

you will not stand a chance.

.

The breath coming out of her

flies through smoldering coals,

the flames lick her lips,

they dance in her eyes.

Whenever she calls out,

it crackles in her roars.

Fire and embers serve as powerful metaphors for growth, pain, and personal power. The recurring motif of flames creates cohesion while reinforcing emotional stakes.

I felt a lot of truth in this, how pain teaches us to protect ourselves without fully hardening. Great work.
