Eavesdropping

An Ekphrastic Sonnet

By D. J. ReddallPublished about a year ago 1 min read
George Kempe, "River Landscape by Moonlight," 1887

Eavesdropping on the moon's conversation

With the busy, ambitious, vexed river

Clarified its dead end job frustration

And gave me a recognition shiver

The moon broke it gently to the river

That all jobs lead to the same, stubborn end

Old friends have this arrow in their quiver

It is difficult but honest to send

Everything flows through a familiar night

Certain that this one will be different

Bathed in the patient moon's gentle light

Of the sameness, sincerely ignorant

New eyes see the same river differently

It's flattered, but remains the same, you see?

Ekphrastic

Really struck by the second stanza and how it added a sense of relational history to the personification of the river and moon! Well done!

I loved that you used the moon and river to portrayal about purpose and inevitability. Love it, DJ! 💌🌟

Love how the moon's like, "Hey river, chill, we're all going with the flow." Deep thoughts wrapped in smooth vibes—nicely done!
