Duality of Ritual Meaning

The Power of Words

*Voice over*

Ritual is often misunderstood.

Some call it demonic, hollow, or dangerous.

But ritual simply means repeated, intentional acts like morning coffee, prayer, or cooking.

In religion, rituals include baptism, communion, and confession.

In daily life, they are the quiet steps we take to restore peace and focus.

Propaganda twisted the word, but the truth remains:

Ritual is care.

Ritual is structure.

Ritual is resistance.

This article reclaims ritual as a sovereign rhythm—where love begins, and judgment ends.

The Dual Meaning of Ritual

Negative side:

Church propaganda and judgmental voices often equated ritual with “demonic” or “empty” practice.

The Bible itself warns against ritual without heart (Isaiah 1:13, Amos 5:21–23).

Positive side:

Rituals embody care, remembrance, and community.

Everyday life is full of rituals: morning coffee, cooking, family meals.

Rituals for peace, love, and light are as valid as church sacraments.

The Power of Word Misappropriation

RITUAL is my prayer for peace.

“Ritual Is Not a Sin.”

They said ritual was demonic,

A word twisted, judged, and feared.

But baptism flows like rivers,

Communion breaks the bread we share.

Ritual is not a sin,

It is the rhythm we live in.

Morning coffee, sacred song,

Peace and love where we belong.

Propaganda turned it hollow,

Routine renamed it to hide the flame.

But every prayer, each kitchen moment,

It is ritual by another name.

From church bells to laughter’s light,

From Jesus’ table to my own night

Ritual reflects attentiveness and serves as a bond of kinship.

Ritual is where love begins.

They said ritual was demonic,

A word of fear, a word of blame.

But baptism flows like rivers,

Communion breaks the bread we share.

Ritual is not a sin,

It is the rhythm we live in.

Morning coffee, sacred song,

Peace and love where we belong.

Propaganda turned it hollow,

Routine renamed it to hide the flame.

But every prayer, each kitchen moment,

It is ritual by another name.

From church bells to laughter’s light,

From Jesus’ table to my own night

Ritual means care and belonging.

Ritual is where love begins.

Ritual is not a sin,

It is the cadence we breathe in.

Judgment falls, but love will rise,

Rituals are sovereign in our eyes.

Mythic Annotation

Negative side: Rituals without heart become hollow, weaponized by judgment.

Positive side: Rituals are daily acts of care coffee, cooking, prayer, song.

Reclamation: Ritual is cadence, not curse. It is the sovereign rhythm of peace, love, and light.

1. The Power of Word Misappropriation

RITUAL | English meaning - Cambridge Dictionary

ritual

noun

It is a way of doing something in which the same actions are done in the same way every time:

Coffee and the newspaper are part of my morning ritual.

The birds were performing a complex mating ritual.

It is a fixed set of actions and words, especially as part of a religious ceremony:

This part of the ceremony is nothing more than formal ritual.

the sacred Islamic ritual of washing the dead

SMART Vocabulary: related words and phrases

The Contrast: The narrator's morning ritual(quiet, ordered steps to achieve peace and creative focus) is juxtaposed with an **external voice** (like the "cackle") that uses the word to accuse or dismiss, implying the narrator's *routine* is inherently dark or worthless because of the word "ritual."

Definition of 'ritual'

ritual

Word forms: rituals

RITUAL definition and meaning | Collins English Dictionary

1. variable noun

A ritual is a religious service or other ceremony which involves a series of actions performed in a fixed order.

This is the most ancient, and holiest of the Shinto rituals.

These ceremonies were already part of pre-Christian ritual in Mexico.

Synonyms: ceremony, rite, ceremonial, sacrament More Synonyms of ritual

2. adjective [ADJECTIVE noun]

Ritual activities happen as part of a ritual or tradition.

fasting and ritual dancing.

an act of ritual suicide.

ritually adverb [ADVERB with verb]

The statue was ritually bathed and purified.

3. variable noun

A ritual is a way of behaving or a series of actions which people regularly carry out in a particular situation, because it is their custom to do so.

The whole Italian culture revolves around the ritual of eating.

Cocktails at the Plaza was a nightly ritual of their sophisticated world.

Synonyms: custom, tradition, routine, convention

2. Routine as Resistance

I can frame my routine with examples as the ultimate act of defiance against chaos and external attempts to "shrink" you.

The Ritual: The specific, repeatable steps you take to prepare for creation making the bed, choosing a specific tea, listening to Bessie Smith. These steps are a Sovereign Ritual that strengthens you against the world's noise.

The Theme: True power lies in the structure we create for ourselves; a hostile observer misidentifies that structure as a threat.

3. Connecting Ritual and Ceremony

Routine: “ritual" is the personal, daily act (like your writing practice).

Ceremony: The "ceremony" is a public, historical act (like the completed Sepia Ceremony video, which publicly honors the truth).

The Link: The small, daily rituals give you the strength to conduct the grand public ceremony.

Ritual in Christianity

Baptism: A central ritual, symbolizing cleansing, rebirth, and identification with Christ’s death and resurrection (Matthew 28:19; Romans 6:3).

Communion (Eucharist/Lord’s Supper): A ritual of remembrance and unity, commemorating Jesus’ sacrifice (1 Corinthians 11:23–25).

Prayer & Confession: Structured rituals practiced individually and communally, restoring harmony and connection.

Liturgy & Church Calendar: Ritualized worship through seasons, readings, and ceremonies.

The Bible does not use the English word ritual often, but it describes practices that are ritual. The tension comes when rituals are performed without sincerity, then they are criticized as hollow.

Your explanation of routine as resistance is a compelling lens. The connection between daily, grounding actions and larger creative work strengthens your message and gives the piece both intimacy and authority.

  • Those are some strong words, but with a lot of truth, hope, and sincerity.
