A memory

A room existing only in memory,

In the morning, it melted away,

Though I caught while turning, the pattern of the first frost

Lightly on my gown and a whitened strand of hair in the mirror.

Lifting a finger to trace the opulent pattern,

Breath held barefoot,

The old figured carpet

As if the frost had tried to emulate it,

The room and the scent of Grandma's house, an entire world,

A temporary etching, drawn in blue and white.

Bent on charming the autumn procession into winter,

Queen Mab and her retinue shedding feathers and lacy ferns in flight,

Or a fairy princess flitted that way crowned with jeweled leaf diadem,

Endowed a single width of fragile glass dividing warm from cold,

With fronds of sparkling lace making curtains where there were none

Moonlit windowpanes in fancy dress,

From a dream awaking within a castle in the air.

What a lovely flight of winter fancy - both mournful and wistful in tone. A poem that lingers. Congrats!

Masterful metaphors here! I enjoyed what you did with these words. This was among my favourites: "Breath held barefoot." Oooh, that's powerful imagery!
