Don't Cry for Me, Cry for Us.
For Kayleigh's "One of Us" challenge
If tomorrow starts without me,
I know that you’ll not cry.
You’ve no time for me as I live,
why grieve me as I die?
We’ve not been one of the same mind,
could never communicate.
We’ve spent our time as enemies
with our politics of hate.

Don’t waste your tears on me, friend,
and I’ll waste none on you.
Cry instead for what we’ve wrought
with stubborn hate-filled feuds.
Think about how far we’ve fallen
the damage we have caused
Insults, our only discourse left
our civility, the cost.

I fear for what we’ll leave behind,
the lessons we’d have taught,
To those to whom we will pass on
the humanity we’ve lost.
“Agree to disagree,” we’ll say,
but never compromise.
Each thinking we know all the answers,
that we, alone, are wise.

I pray that when our day does come
that tomorrow’s not meant to be,
that you and I will have found our way,
that, eye-to-eye, we’ll see.
To treat each other with respect,
agree or not, be kind,
and let hope dry the tears that fall
for the tomorrows we leave behind.
