Quiet time
every other lunch period
was like
taking a dose
of needed self care.
Classrooms
were loud as wild creatures,
so I had
to disconnect.
In the school library,
in the hallways
or at the local coffee shop
was where I hibernated.
Of course,
I would hang out
with friends
when I had the desire to.
But,
I was famished
for “me time”
to play pencil puzzles,
read books
and listen to music.
I wasn’t trying
to close you up
in a box
or tell you
that I didn’t want to
be your friend.
I just needed
to disconnect,
because classrooms
were packed like zoos
and I couldn’t
mentally breathe.
