Disappearing into the Crowd (and Kind of Okay with It)

For the "Instructions for Disappearing" Challenge

By Sandy GillmanPublished 6 months ago β€’ 1 min read
A young Sandy getting ready for her third Defqon.1 Australia festival in 2011

On the bus to Defqon.1,

everyone’s been drinking

since 10 a.m.

You catch a glimpse of the lake

outside the bus window.

Okay, let’s go!

🌈πŸ’₯πŸ”ŠπŸŒˆπŸ’₯πŸ”ŠπŸŒˆ

Here’s where the fun begins.

🌈πŸ’₯πŸ”ŠπŸŒˆπŸ’₯πŸ”ŠπŸŒˆ

Now, make a vague plan.

You’ll meet at an approximate

time and place.

Feeling certain you’ll see each other again,

head off to the drink token stand.

You’ll need a drink for each hand.

🌈πŸ’₯πŸ”ŠπŸŒˆπŸ’₯πŸ”ŠπŸŒˆ

Don’t forget the plan.

🌈πŸ’₯πŸ”ŠπŸŒˆπŸ’₯πŸ”ŠπŸŒˆ

Find your favourite stage,

RED, GOLD, or MAGENTA.

Dance the afternoon away.

Time will fly by

in a blur of toilet trips,

bar stops,

and dancing.

🌈πŸ’₯πŸ”ŠπŸŒˆπŸ’₯πŸ”ŠπŸŒˆ

Don’t forget the plan.

🌈πŸ’₯πŸ”ŠπŸŒˆπŸ’₯πŸ”ŠπŸŒˆ

Now, I think it’s time

to meet up with your friends.

What time did we decide on again?

🌈πŸ’₯πŸ”ŠπŸŒˆπŸ’₯πŸ”ŠπŸŒˆ

Did you forget the plan?

🌈πŸ’₯πŸ”ŠπŸŒˆπŸ’₯πŸ”ŠπŸŒˆ

Wander to where

you think the meeting point was.

There definitely weren’t

this many people here this morning.

Lost in the crowd,

you look around

and don’t see any familiar faces.

Fire twirlers pass you by.

Did you just see a circus clown?

Check your phone:

Emergency Calls Only

Damn!

Typical festival reception!

🌈πŸ’₯πŸ”ŠπŸŒˆπŸ’₯πŸ”ŠπŸŒˆ

I think you forgot the plan!

🌈πŸ’₯πŸ”ŠπŸŒˆπŸ’₯πŸ”ŠπŸŒˆ

Oh well,

just give up.

There are only a few

hours left of the day.

Go back to your favourite stage,

throw your hands in the air,

and dance, dance, dance.

🌈πŸ’₯πŸ”ŠπŸŒˆπŸ’₯πŸ”ŠπŸŒˆ

I went to every Defqon.1 festival held in Australia (2009–2018). This poem is my tribute to the art of getting lost in the crowd and still having the best day ever!
