Detract from Daily Life

Hiding amongst the shadows

Dear brain, please learn to concentrate,

I need to consider all the relevant possibilities,

Storytelling, dreaming, fantasising, procrastination,

Tormenting me with false hope, concentrate now please,

Racing thoughts need to calm and solutions will arise,

Attracting the positivity that will allow my thoughts to flow,

Concentration, my dear brain, will aid in worthy thought patterns,

Trust please. We don’t need frantic worries or anxious concerns,

Instead, allow for a calming influence, controlled concentration,

Obviously when we work together my dear brain, we will win,

Narrowing our periods of distraction to whimsical wondering.

***

Distraction,

Ideas at random times,

Stifling our worries,

Trading for escapism,

Running from our anxiety,

Any alternate thoughts,

Carry us away,

Towards relief,

Instead of overthinking,

Over stressing.

Needing a distraction is perfectly fine.

***

Dressing for entertainment,

Idiosyncrasies of our favourite escape,

Striving for a relaxing break, some relief,

Trying to forget or trying to bury the memories,

Relentlessly praying upon our days, tormenting,

Acting as the restraints that tether us in place,

Cautioning us in the ways of the worried,

Turning us into a depressive society,

Information overload, oppression,

Obligatory rules thrust upon us,

Necessitating daily distractions.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.

Colleen this was fantastic. All three are beautifully written. I love it. You are right your writing has become even better. Your writing was already exceptional when I first discovered you a year and a half ago. You were one of my early favorites and you still are.

So relatable. I let my mind wonder a lot too. It's an escape from reality.

  • Nice acrostic trilogy.

  • Whoaaaa, you did three! First poem: Lol, try telling my brain that! Second poem: This one was so relatable and made me feel less guilty for wanting a distraction. Third poem: And there's your signature powerful piece!
