So recently we attended a sister church for a baptism and we saw a huge sign in the fellowship hall that said, " Just give me coffee and Jesus".

OK. Where to begin.

First of all, coffee should never come before Jesus- even on a sign.

Second of all, coffee should never come before Jesus- even on a sign.

Third of all, well you should know by now... that coffee should never come before Jesus- even on a sign.

Was it tacky? Oh yes. Would Jesus have forgiven them? Absolutely. He already has.

I enjoy coffee. Yes. This was a glass of Black Silk coffee with Reese's Peant Butter creamer. I know, right? A little hug of decadence in a wine glass to honor my friend , Liz, who said, " never save anything good for a special occasion" . And she'd meet me at the barn in the morning with a Mimosa in a wine glass. A magnificent memory and how I miss those Mimosas in the morning. She had stage 4 stomach cancer and left us way too soon. I still use wine glasses to drink out of though as an elegant nod to her.

So anyway, I enjoy coffee... dark, strong and with flavored creamer. Do I idolize it? No. If I forget to buy it, I drink something else. To me a good cup of coffee is like a hug, although I've forgotten what those feel like... coffee is a substitute for affection, apparently.

Would I enjoy my coffee if I didn't have Christ Jesus watching over me? No.

But it's OK because he gave me a helper , the Holy Spirit, who stays with me and guides me, and he's OK with me drinking my coffee. But I have my priorities straight. Coffee for hug and Christ Jesus for life. If I didn't know I had the support system I have in Him, my coffee would be flavorless. My life would lack direction and hope, and I would give up all the coffee in the world to stand in front of Him. And one day, I will. That makes me enjoy my coffee more. And then I wonder how good the coffee is in heaven...

And He is first always, and even when my soulmate finally shows up for me, he will be the one who puts Christ Jesus first and me second. As it should be.

So dear coffee, don't ever think you come first in my life. I mean, you're lovely and all, but not wonder- working lovely.

So maybe I'll make them a sign that says,

" Just give me Jesus so I can drink my coffee with extra extra".

AMEN.

This is a very creative, well written piece. Coffee is delicious and I like how you made it clear that itโ€™s not subtracting from your spiritual relationship with God.
