Dancing On A Tightrope.

To Like Or Not To Like.

By Cathy (Christine Acheini) Ben-Ameh.Published 4 months ago 1 min read

I hover with my keyboard
ready to strike brilliance
but then I think
what if you take it wrong?
what if my joke lands flat?
what if your cousin screenshots it?

and suddenly I am the villain...

So instead I click like
the universal nod
the safe handshake of the internet
yes I saw you
yes I respect you
but no I will not risk my words.

If I know you are touchy,
I stay silent like a monk.
If I know you are chatty,
I dive in with glee.
and if I know you are both,
I scroll away praying for peace.

And sometimes,
I simply do not read
not because I do not care,
but because my brain
and my moral compass
are too tired to argue with your post.

So if you wonder why
my comments come and go,
remember this,
I am a professional tightrope walker,
balancing between
support and survival.

  • This is why they say ignorance is bliss. We gotta do it for our mental peace. Loved your poem!

  • Yikes. That balance is hard to achieve indeed! Smart poem, Cathy, very witty.

This was so relatable! I never thought of the Like as being the universal nod, but it's so true.
