Current

To sink or to swim

The world is too loud

Her mind is full of dangerous ideas

She jumps in and plunges beneath

The chilly water takes her breath

Here, she hears no sound

Though her heart pounds

Her thoughts are quieted too

She relents and descends in stillness

It’s dark all around

The current tugs at her heels

Reaching up to grab more of her

Beckoning her downward with an icy grip

She will have to fight it

To somehow loosen its hold

But that is only if she wants to

The cold has numbed her

She considers submitting

Disappearing to the depths

The choice, to sink or swim

sad poetry
