Come Out To Play!

Beautiful Rosa was a delight

Except she only came out at night

‘Rosa, Rosa come out to play!’

The children knocking would all say

‘No no not today’

Rosa said ‘please go away!’

‘I really do not like the sun

The darkness is much more fun’

And so all the children would leave

Promising to come back in the eve

With Rosa the fun would never end

Everyone wanted to be her friend

With dark curls the colour of night

Rosa was a glorious sight

With eyes the prettiest, clearest blue

It was a gift when she looked at you

Children didn’t mind if she stayed in all day

Waiting for night to come and play

Rosa knew the exact best game

That she hid all day was such a shame

Rosa’s parents were never there

But Rosa never seemed to care

No one had ever been inside her home

Rosa seemed to live alone

When the moon replaced the sun

Out came Rosa for some fun

On their bikes the children would ride

Till it was time to go inside

And Rosa would stay out on her own

Never going inside her home

Instead Rosa would patrol the street

Smiling at those she would meet

Waiting until she saw the one

That no one would miss if they were gone

‘Hello’ she would smile ‘May I help you?’

They would believe her goodness was true

‘You look alone here in the park

Do you want to get out of the dark?

Come with me and if you should tire

You can rest a while by my fire’

Rosa would lead them to her house

Treating them as gentle as a mouse

‘Come, rest and sit a while’

Rosa would say with a sweet smile

And while the person warmed their hands

Little Rosa had other plans

Rosa locked every door

Locking the windows on every floor

In front of the fire, the person did sleep

Up behind them Rosa would creep

‘Time to wake my lovely guest,

Time to wake, you’ve had enough rest’

‘A game we are going to play

If you win you’ll live another day

But if I am the true winner

Then you, my friend, will be my dinner’

I will count from one to twenty

Time to run, I’m giving you plenty

You will quickly go and hide

Pray that luck is on your side

Then I will hunt you down

Come on now, please, do not frown

Nothing in this world is free

You must play this game with me’

And they would run and scream and cry

‘Please Rosa, I don’t want to die!’

Around the house they will flee

Filling Rosa with dreadful glee

On each floor she will walk

Her hidden prey she will stalk

‘Come out, come out wherever you are

I know this house, you won’t get far’

Shuddering, hiding, trembling in fear

They can hear her getting near

But quick! She went to another floor

Hurry! Hurry! Get to the door!

Running towards the only way out

‘I’m free!’ They really wanted to shout

The door only inches away

Than a voice whispers ‘Not today’

This was Rosa’s favourite part

Little Rosa was so smart

Let them think they could flee

Let them think they were free

Of her game it was the best part

She could hear the beating of their heart

As she got oh so near

Rosa loved the taste of their fear

‘No please let me go!’

Rosa giggled ‘No, no, no’

From the shadow Rosa leaps

In this game she plays for keeps

Rosa’s fangs upon the throat

The steam of blood begins to coat

Greedily Rosa drank her fill

Tired, sated, full and still

As soon as dawn begins to break

All around the townspeople start to wake

Little Rosa goes to sleep

Into her coffin without a peep

And here I have laid her secret bare

Truth be told it’s only fair

Rosa’s soul was forged in fire

Little Rosa is a vampire

‘Rosa! Rosa come out to play’

The children knocking would all say

‘It is such a shame

Rosa knows the exact best game’

And little Rosa in her sleep would smile

She would wake in a while

And out she would play with her friends

And later someone’s life she will end
