Us queers, we know how to laugh

Throw shade, make the best damn juiciest turkey

Our spirits, bright like that tree that's been decorated in all shades

Cause someone kept tryin'a fix it and then the cat toppled half of it over

Good thing there were drinks

Non-alcoholic bubbly that even got the cat going

(Maybe that's what happened to the tree)

But oh, it was fiiiine, really, it gave us something to fuss about, a story for years to come, something

To focus on so someone could add way too much garlic to the mash

You'd think they were discouraging tossing kisses like polka-dotted butterflies

Lipstick-stained cheeks that hurt from smiling so much

But oh, we kissed anyways, garlic-breath and all

Smooched till our lips smudged happiness bigger than the moon's crescent smile

And the music? Oh, it was divine

Like chorused laughter to our ears but more at the right pitch cause let's be real, we're all tone deaf

Except of course that one bitch who can really belt it

She can always hush us with her Beyonce covers

(even though I prefer Rihanna)

But this,

this is fam,

in all its rays of rainbow as we create traditions that ain't toxically passed down for the sake of saying "tradition"

That are built around community and build us up

(especially after a long year that has tried to tear us down)

We won't give up, no

We gather, dance, sing, give sloppy kisses and squeal at the regrets that are a new year's problem

And feast on that juicy ass turkey till our buttons pop and our eyelashes hang funny
