but darling, don't you see?

it's because he loves you.

but darling, don't you see?

because somewhere along the way,

we realised,

these were not the disney princes we had been sold.

There were no great love stories

or unconditional romantic gestures awaiting us.

No one was going to sweep us off our feet,

with kind words and comforting touches.

instead,

the words were contrived at best,

callous at worst.

the touches,

entitled,

ravenous.

and instead of demanding for more,

as we should,

the world convinced us that this was acceptable,

human nature, in fact.

their objectifying gestures,

and crude remarks,

are love.

the boys who are mean to us are our Prince Charmings.

We took what we could,

smothered our expectations and self-worth in the dirt,

all while the world sat back and said,

but darling, don't you see?

it's because he loves you.
