bullseye.
Shopping as sanctuary during social distancing.

I found something small,
Within urban sprawl,
To bring me joy,
And I said, ahoy.
To the Target store,
I walked in the door.
Put on my mask for the friendly staff.
They sanitized my cart and I didn’t need to ask.
First to beauty,
I’ve missed this duty.
To make up my face,
And go to an actual place.
Next up is food.
Depending on my mood,
I choose many snacks.
They keep me coming back.
I’ve gained the quaran-ten,
But I’ll go back again.
It’s too great a feat,
To fight against the lure of a comfort eat.
I browse the children’s clothing aisle,
Maybe something to make my niece smile.
I grin at Cat and Jack,
As they hang on the rack.
The kid stuff makes me grin,
Just like I’m a kid again.
Unicorns and glitter,
Small birds all a-twitter.
Dinosaurs playing sports,
And sharks on little shorts.
Tiny hair bows and sneakers,
So many different creatures!
I tear myself away,
To try on swimsuits today.
There’s no where I can travel,
But I’m hoping not to unravel.
The fitting rooms are closed,
But I feel confident about the bikini I chose.
I’ll only be sitting on my fire escape,
Sweating like crazy and dreaming of a lake.
Off to the school supplies,
There’s nothing better, in my eyes!
I don’t even go to school,
But all of their stuff is cool.
Notebooks, stickers, and pens,
I’m a kid again!
Pencil holders, markers, and a mirror for a locker,
I’d get one but remember I’m an “adult” and I feel somber.
The sadness is short-lived,
I realize I have so much more to give.
This store inspires me on a religious level,
And I love to come here and revel.
Last stop is candles,
Or perhaps maybe sandals.
Either way,
I’ll be using self-checkout today.
