Broken But Still Standing
Beautifully imperfect

Her solitary existence is her perfection,
Her peace, her fortitude, her blessing,
Born to be on her own,
Protecting her solitude, at all costs, her power,
One with the quietude.
******
Trust is her nemesis,
Human beings a destruction to her peace,
Loyalty her greatest flaw,
Her love; one that’ll never cease,
But will always burden her heart.
******
She knows her worth; which she often forfeits,
Weight dripping from her soul as the years pass,
Her heart beats to the tune of her silence,
Until it decides to be a pain in the arse,
And shatter wholeheartedly.
******
Solitude, her aloneness and her strength are her greatest security,
She has no need of validation from another,
Destiny rules her future, sets her track,
Destroying any reliance on any other,
While she wanders her own path.
******
Her spirit flies with the wind,
Her tears water the lessons forward written,
Her heart sings of pain and torment,
Twice loved and twice bitten,
Until she accepted her fate.
******
Blades adorn her back foretelling her past,
She wears those wounds and the lies they stand for with pride,
Nails drawn of blood; her fight enduring,
As she holds her head high, refusing to hide,
Walking through her own private hell with attitude.
******
She knows not the end of her days,
But will follow her heart forever more,
Do her dirty; blasphemy her name,
She’ll smile lovingly as she shows you the door,
To turn her back and walk into her blessed solitude once more.
About the Creator
Colleen Millsteed
My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
