The Truth Hurts

Destroyer of hearts

Hidden truths; half lies,

Words so carelessly spoken,

Exaggerations, pity party,

A heart in love, or an offered token.

++++++

Words; the cruellest form of any language,

Thrown to the wind so effortlessly,

Meaningless distraction,

A game played so heartlessly.

++++++

Memories twisted behind the scenes,

Twisted within denial,

A softly spoken hello in turmoil,

A sand-filled memorial aisle.

++++++

Perfection corroded in reality,

A chest tight with pain,

A throat battling to breathe through the sobs,

A heart shattered again.

++++++

Hopes destroyed upon a moonless dream,

All to big note a desperate soul,

Errant demands of wasteful words,

Concreting a future in which it stole.

++++++

Doubts overridden with zealous wounds,

To best one living in loyalty,

Betrayal a sense of entitlement,

Insisting the due of royalty.

++++++

Light brightens the darkness once more,

Eyes opened to the truth revealed,

Naivety held innocently,

Destroyed at the truth hideously concealed.

++++++

Cruelty sprouts from well rehearsed lips,

Tears pulled into a form of payment; debt overdue,

The toll of the absentee years taking a toll,

Shattered upon a broken heart’s point of view.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.

    It felt as if the words were conversing with me about how words can shatter hearts and hopes. Cruelty sprouts from well rehearsed lips, this line is so true!! Well done!!
