Brighten Your Horizons

Sometimes "goodbye" is simpler than we think.

a snapshot or two does little to tell just how much

we may ache inside as heartbreaks pile up and up.

we could have been forever, maybe, if that word

even exists anymore for anyone present in the room.

the pictures may show a thousand lives, each second

kept for posterity, another thing to file away to forget.

but there is hope beyond tomorrow, a fracture to heal,

even when the cracks shine through with hollow space.

maybe we should have said we weren’t aiming for “forever,”

but just the right amount of time for us in all shades.

yesterday is not the same as today or tomorrow, and

we parted in words like, “we’ll be friends again someday.”

tomorrow you’ll take a photograph of the tree that was ours,

and you’ll send it to me with no message, a peace offering.

we can’t say, “I love you,” so easily anymore, but there

were good times to be had, weren’t there, for you and me?

for the rest of today, there may be tears to be shed and lost, but

I’ll always remember how you said there were brighter days ahead.
