Bone Cage

Keep Silent, Keep Safe

By Emily McGuffPublished about a year ago 1 min read

The buildings fell like

dirt clod raindrops

rubble clouds the air

-

The roads cracked deep

wrinkles of giants

I swallow the stones

-

The echo of life

still haunts us all

-

Our hearts quiver

grow tight in their bone cage

but we keep our secrets

to keep us safe

from those who want to crush us

-

I remember,

The bombing day,

or was it big disease?

-

The only thing

I know now is

That I can’t shake the fleas

-

Our hearts quiver

grow tight in their bone cage

but we keep our secrets

to keep us safe

from the hell we’ve created

-

This place is filled

With twisted rubble

The throwaways and old tin cans

-

We’re filthy, dirty

pleading fools

But no ones left to beg

-

Our hearts quiver

grow tight in their bone cage

but we keep our secrets

to keep us safe

from the echo left in our heads

-

Keep silent

Keep safe

Your words will only betray you

Keep quiet

Keep it at bay

The world is crumbling around you

-

When the trucks all pour it,

Its filthier and dirtier,

That’s how I know its already gone down

-

And survivors, there are so many,

Living in their shining glass,

They’ll pretend, but I know the big bad

Has already happened

-

Our hearts quiver

grow tight in their bone cage

but we keep our secrets

to keep us safe
