no hummus

By becca shapiroPublished 5 years ago 2 min read

asked me if i stopped eating so many carrots "no i have not" but they want me to stop -- why do you -- i just like carrots -- can't explain it -- it's part of my identity -- "but your skin is turning" -- i like it, i tell them -- you -- yes -- want to be ORANGE? -- i guess so -- you do -- i guess so? -- look at the inside of my palms -- "show us your palms" -- no -- "look they're orange!" -- they're bright orange jacked up i'm a jack-o-lantern overripe citrus even my driver's license photo i look oversaturated makes my clothes dull in comparison reason i dig tie-dye tee shirts neon leather pants anything that sparkles or shines or screams -- "or you could stop eating carrots" -- anything bright or unexpected or fuzzy or NOT -- why not? -- i...don't know -- you're an addict -- it's more like -- it's more like -- an identity -- and i mean they taste good -- you are what you eat -- beta carotene? is a vitamin -- i guess? -- is it healthy? -- are you okay? -- the doctors sit me down and say:

Anything to an extreme is unhealthy

so i pop another -- CRUNCH -- into my mouth -- "do you want hummus with that?" -- screw your hummus i'm here for the raw the crunchy the straight-from-the-ground -- at basketball practice in middle school we'd put in our hands and mine was -- there were all different colors but mine was ORANGE -- self-destructive tendencies, i'll tell you, they've got to manifest somehow and mine, well, of all the ways to self-destruct is it really so bad -- things could be worse! -- is it really so awful to -- got this drive to push farther and farther and the more extreme i've gone the more i want to -- but also i mean they just taste so damn good -- we're all self-destructive -- and at this point it's how i'm recognized -- the girl who eats carrots -- i LIKE being orange -- i do -- and like i said they taste good -- and if it weren't for this i'd be riding motorcycles or shooting heroin -- so just -- i swear -- let me eat my carrots --
