Beneath the Branches

I walk alone in the middle of nowhere

I meet stillness and serenity

There is no one here except for me

I’ve longed for this. The leaves are still

It’s just me, and I’m unbecoming

I’m letting go of the ghosts of the past

And inviting newness into my life

It’s humid today, but I don’t mind

As long as I’m alone, I’m alright

I go back in time

Gentle breeze and leaves under my shoes

I sit in front of a lake and meet myself

The branches whisper to me

They have stories to tell

I listen patiently

I have nowhere else to be

All my days are a little bit empty

I doze off on the bench

Soothed by the calmness

The sky turns dark. I’m still there

The lake calls to me

Its depths and its secrets

I wake up, and my bedroom door is open

My cat walks in

His soft paws on the floor

We bond over our love for quietness

He looks at me

I wish I could tell what he’s thinking

The afternoon sun reaches my bed

And greets me

I need more sleep

My feet are on the cold floor

My cat meows

He’s the only magic

In my mundane life

We don’t get along

But I think I understand

His need for solitude

I pick him up

I think he understands

My love for him.
