Bat:

Hello, I'm a bat, small and sleek,

I don’t suck blood, I don't want you to freak.

I promise I won’t tangle in your hair,

So please don't fear,

If I fly inside, please don’t hit me, dear!

Human:

Oh, little bat, you startled me so,

But now I understand, so I’ll let you go.

No need for a bat or a squash, I see,

It will hurt you so much, oh dear me!

Bat:

It’s an accident, I didn’t mean any fright,

Please know that if I land, I can’t take off in the night.

I need your help, please be gentle and kind,

Grab a towel, and ease my troubled mind.

Human:

I'll help you, bat, I’ll be gentle and fair,

I'll get a towel to help, I’ll show you I care.

Out you’ll fly, dear creature!

Go back to your night, feed on bugs,

And catch your breath in the moonlight.

Bat crying:

Our homes are demolished, so few are left to see!

I might intrude sometimes, but don’t be angry at me.

Just maybe turn off your lights,

and leave the outside on,

And I’ll be out soon, I’ll be gone by dawn.

Human:

I understand your plight, little bat,

I’ll guide you out with the light.

I'll show you I care, I’ll show you the way!

Please be safe in the night,

And find a place to stay!

Author note: Bats face dangers from habitat loss, pollution, and human misunderstanding, threatening their essential role in our ecosystem. This short dialogue hopes to inform people in a fun way about these dangers to bats and some ideas about how we may help them.

This reminds me of the fruit bats that used to hang around my grandmother's home! They were more afraid of us than we were of them! This frightened one will take comfort in your poem.
