Baby Girl

When You Just Know

By Misty RaePublished 4 years ago 1 min read
Me, as a baby

Raven haired with eyes so blue,

Almost violet,

A perfect contrast against porcelain skin.

You were mine.

I didn't come for you,

Not exactly,

I came to support my brother.

His love had died,

Tragic.

Twenty-six, beautiful,

So full of life and love,

Gone in an instant,

Leaving you,

A motherless waif.

Sweet,

Innocent,

Full of life's untold promise.

Six pounds,

Give or take.

They placed you in my arms,

My heart swelled

You reached out,

You grabbed my nose,

And stole my heart.

I swear you smiled,

And I did too.

I was too old for a baby,

Unprepared and unaware,

Of the challenges you'd bring.

None of it mattered,

Not for me.

Not for you.

For you, I'd have run a million miles,

I'd have crossed every sea.

For you, I'd give my very life,

And more.

In your eyes,

In that grasp,

Heaven and Earth aligned,

Baby to Daddy,

Daddy to baby,

No cares,

No worries,

Age and time suspended,

And I knew instantly

That you were mine,

My baby girl.

I was adopted at 3 weeks old by my paternal uncle. My mother died of unknown circumstances when I was 3 weeks old, leaving me and my 2 siblings at the age of 26.

My biological mother, who died at the age of 26 in August, 1971

I'm not sure of all the details, I was a baby, but this poem is a reflection of what my father told me. My mother, pictured above, died when I was 3 weeks old of unknown circumstances leaving me and my brother and sister behind. I was eventually adopted by my biological father's brother and this poem is a testament to what he said he felt when he first met me. He claimed that when I grabbed his nose, he knew. It was love at first sight in its purest form. And buy, am I glad it was!
