At The Party

I Looked

He said hello to me

Can I go? to me

I laughed without looking

Lame line, same line

Brothas say it all the time line

Just getting some air, my reply

Didn’t even have to think

Trying not to spill my drink

I breezed by but

He whispered the line, a second time

As I passed

Can I go?

The space between us smelled like sandalwood and him

I breathed it in—just getting some air

I stopped and turned, this time I looked

And looked

And looked

And locked

Green eyes staring into brown

Nature’s palette

Grass blades poking through the ground

Nature’s palette

Leaves on trees

Brown eyes staring into green

The majesty it was meant to be

What God did

His smile so like a sun

We go together

Green and brown and sunlight

We could grow together

Planted seeds

With just

this

look

Where did all the people go?

He stepped closer in my space

I was rooted

Dancing inside to beating hearts

Two beating hearts

What happened to the music?

He said his name

Held out his hand

I shook it

Held it

Knowing I was touching love

Again, he said hello to me

Can I go? to me

I found my breath and then my voice

And I said

Please
