Give me back the color of my skin

The color of my soul

The color of my people

To have the power to know

To let my soul’s self-culture grow

Not just paper pedigree Mexican

But the color brown flexin’

Give me back the color of my skin

Be reborn into a town of mexican warriors

Recognize my parents in their strollers

When they were filled with wonders

Corners of their neighborhoods covered

Step into their adobe doorways

Close my eyes against the fading sun’s rays

Give me back the color of my skin

So I can wake up at dawn

Hearing the farm animals yawn

And the pavlovian bells of street vendors

Drinks of mango, lime and guava splendors

Take in the colorful flood of stands

Recognize the aromatic scent of our land

Give me back the color of my skin

Mom, Dad now I understand

Why you became numb and sad

Your homeland changed

With every step headed north

Memories of your past became faded

Family left behind brought your tears forth
