As Her Eyes Open On A New Day
She shines bright once more

She fought her demons; see them over their locked in their cage?
She laughs as she listens to them beg, cry and finally rage,
She glances over her shoulder as she waltzes out the door,
Leaving them laying in a bloody puddle on the floor.
******
She knows she may have won the fight, leaving them bleeding and maimed,
But she’s well aware she has a long way to go before she’ll see them tamed,
Their screams and pleas tend to keep her awake at night,
Her heart weary of the battle they made her fight.
******
She’s stronger for the experience, her boundaries now firmly in place,
She’ll not tolerate the same treatment, no longer needing to save face,
She’s lost some of her biggest dreams, deepest loves, along with her hopes and desires,
Which taught her how to survive the halls of Hell and its hottest fires.
******
She’ll no longer meekly take up second place; no longer suffer the sacrifice,
She knows she deserves a healthy dose of respect on any roll of the dice,
She long ago lost her fear of going it alone,
And is happy to walk away from those who like to play games, to go off on her own.
******
Life is gradually getting shorter day by day,
So she’s far more content to take the easier way,
When her demons come back to try and haunt her nights,
She reminds them of the outcome of their multiple fights.
******
When she crawls into bed each evening to sleep,
She lays her head to allow her dreams and hopes to spiral in deep,
When she opens her eyes on a new dawn,
Her fight, strength and resilience has once more been reborn.
About the Creator
Colleen Millsteed
My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
