As Ember Sweeps
A Poem for the Holiday Challenge
Prologue
As we approach the season of giving, remember to include one for ourselves too.
This narrative poem involves a generous chimney sweep, Ember. Enjoy!
**********************************************************************
Ember graces chimneys on long winter nights
Her short broom whispers, and her cap flies
With each sweep, she leaves love
A warm ember on the grooves above.
**********************************************************************
Her footprints trace the chimney walls,
By day unseen, gone when night falls.
Each ember she leaves glows sure and bright
But her hearth stays stark at night.
**********************************************************************One frosty night, as stars did blink
She watched the lights in her hearth shrink
There in the silence, she felt the sting
She, who gave, needed warmth to bring
**********************************************************************
With a sweep of her broom and a bright spark,
The sweeper lit a fire in her hearth
Her chimney gleamed with a gentle glow
Black ashes taught what she should know
**********************************************************************
To give warm embers is an art
That has to start with a full hearth.
