A Poem

picking through the rubble

ruined possibilities

crunched and compacted

by heavy, raven-pecked hearts

dark scavengers stole

their shiny and sparkling

treasures: trust

confidence

wonder

hope

digging in the dingy debris

searching for the glitter

they lost

they glance up and nod

to each other

on occasion

sometimes fooled

by the gleam of a tear

reflecting the sunlight

as

it

falls

heads down

trudge on

they approach the edge

and it's there

suddenly

he frowns and folds his arms

steadfast

watches

her

leap

both praying

she'll sprout pink wings

and glide

to safety into the

greenest of grasses

in the valley
