Alone in the Air

The beauty of companionship on an airplane.

By Joshua MehlPublished 4 years ago 1 min read

I just want to sit next to someone on a plane.

I want to sit there, discussing how the engine sounds like it’s about to explode as it increases in revolutions.

I want to look into someone's eyes as a kid in front of us makes noise. The child screams, and our eyes are screaming with laughter.

I want to offer you gum. “Your ears need to adjust as we gain altitude. Chewing gum creates spit. Spit makes you swallow. It’s science.”

I wanna be a shoulder for you to lay your head on as you drift off to sleep. I am tired also, but it’s okay. I’d rather you sleep. Show confidence in me to provide comfort.

You're sleeping. I’d love to make faces at the flight attendant about how silly you look. Don’t worry, I’ll eat your cookie.

I look right, outside the window. The view is incredible. You simply have to see. I look left. That view is pretty neat also.

I downloaded a movie. I also happen to have a spare headphone. Let’s watch.

The Pilot announces our descent. “Hope it’s slow,” I say. You roll your eyes.

Wheels on the tarmac. Allow me to tell you how I could have landed this plane better.

Exiting the plane, you allow someone to go in front of you. Now in my way, I have no choice but to wrap my arms around your waist, hugging you from behind. You have a backpack on. It’s weird. But it’s right.

Getting food at the airport. Three hour layover. You want to sit down and get some wine. I want McDonald's. Rock paper scissors. Wine it is.

Head to the gate. Run beside you as you walk on the horizontal walkway. You can’t escape me.

Time to board.

Take my seat.

Wait for you to come.

Only you aren’t real.

I’m still waiting for my passenger.
