All the Colours of Green
Green is more than grass,
more than hedges trimmed neat.
It’s peeling paint,
a broken light,
a back lane full of weeds.
It hides in bins,
climbs the gates,
stains the stone where no one looks.
It’s damp walls in old houses,
nettles under the fence,
the shine on apples,
and the rust that tries to hide.
Green doesn’t sit quiet.
It shifts,
moves fast,
behind your eyes if you look for too long.
The best green ever seen
are in the jealous eyes
of a possessive man.
