Achieving the American Dream

The hyperbole of your bootstrap
Sends me to therapy
Like a good little soldier.
Each morning it clears the child-proof cap and
Shakes two pills into my hand;
One cream, one pink.
It says "Look people
In the eyes."
"Smile every time you speak."
It makes my facial muscles weak
From effort.
Greeting a stranger,
Gritting my teeth,
Getting my point across.
I am sweet
Like a good little girl.
I used to drink
The dissonance to sleep.
A cocktail of tequila chasing Xanax
And Vicodin,
Made waking and dreaming indistinguishable.
My head pounds
But now
I take some CBD,
And drink a glass of water,
Like a good little human.
I'll play your game until the day
I don't.

This one feels heavy and tiring...
Excellent
I'm exhausted reading this.
Nice! And I learned a new word. Once I looked it up and reread the poem, the power of the words completely magnified. Nicely done!
So powerful, kp.
Damn poet. Damn.
