Admiring senescent leaves

For I am a philocalist

By Seema PatelPublished 9 months ago 1 min read
Here you see Brisbane box, strawberry tree, and Bronze loquat tree leaves @Seema

I am a philocalist —

someone who sees beauty

in almost everything,

even in senescent leaves.

On my walks,

I just can't ignore

the fallen leaves.

they call me to pick them up

and study the pigments.

I am a biologist,

so I see them as puzzle —

of chlorophyll, and anthocyanins

xanthophylls, and tannins.

I arrange them,

to make art with,

and ponder:

how can something discarded

be so lovely?

Of course, the plant sheds them

to survive heat or cold stress.

But to human eyes,

it's vibrant colors.

Anyway, I enjoy

my leaf admiration —

a simple daily fun.
