Questions for an Addict

How do you convince

a drowning man to stand

when you don't have control

of his legs?

How can you explain

the brilliance of the sun

to eyes that have lost

their shine?

But passion!

But emotion!

But nothing,

but silence.

How does the lover

shed no tears

while the fight rumbles on

around them?

How do you explain to

the world that it's not

broken,

yet you are here to help?

How do you rise

after burrowing inside

of a beaten rib cage?

Where do you turn

when the aid you gave

is needed to survive

on your own?

Why must you convince

a drowning man to stand

when he must learn to

kneel for himself?
