A Yuletide of Yore

A 90s Holiday Replay

By David L BennettPublished about a year ago 2 min read

Oh, Christmas mornings—how they shone,

Back in the 90s, the days we’d known.

When the tree stood tall, and we’d believe,

In the miracle Santa might actually just leave.

We'd race to the living room with glee,

To see what the magic of Christmas would be.

Not a tablet, not a phone—no screens to stare,

Just toys galore, and moments to share.

There were no Wi-Fi woes, no buffering streams,

Just Tamagotchi and Discman in our dreams.

We’d pop in a CD, hit play with a click,

And Green Day or Backstreet Boys would do the trick.

The tree was adorned in glitter and glitz,

Not LED strips or Insta-perfect kits.

And gifts! Oh, the joy of surprise.

No spoilers, no wish lists, no Amazon buys.

The snowflakes fell, as we watched with glee,

Home Alone reruns on the TV.

We'd sing along with The Grinch in tow,

And Miracle on 34th made our hearts glow.

We’d race outside, in jackets too tight,

Building snowmen or a good old snowball fight.

No Snapchats to send or selfies to take,

Just real moments, for real memories’ sake.

The New Year’s Eve felt like a grand parade,

As we waited for the ball drop, eyes all made.

We wore flannel shirts with bowl cut hair,

No TikTok dances or Snapchat flair.

But today, oh today, we look back and grin,

At all the ways the holidays had been.

Now our tech’s advanced, our screens are bright,

But the magic’s different, try as we might.

Sure, we Facetime with family across distant miles,

But there’s something missing from those childhood smiles.

The joy was simpler, the laughter was pure,

Not filtered through apps for sure!

So here’s to the days of the 90s with cheer,

When Christmas meant more than just what’s near.

A gift was a hug, a moment to savor,

Not a “gift card” or trending behavior.

But still, we celebrate—don’t get me wrong,

With memes and emojis, we sing the same song.

Yet sometimes I miss the old holiday ways,

When joy came easy, in those simpler days.

So here’s to the present and past, side by side,

To the laughter we’ve shared, and the memories we’ve tried.

From the 90s to now, the essence is true—

The holiday spirit is timeless, it lives in you!
