A Stroll Down Memory Lane

Reminiscing

She wanders the aisles of her memories,

Stopping to delve into a random folder here and there,

She smiles at the reminder of childhood games,

And other special occasions she managed to share.

**

There’s the day she honoured a long lost promise,

Rode the waves of desire,

Stood by a friendship of long standing,

And that one day that set her nerves on fire.

**

She wandered some more; reminiscing,

A tear strolls down her cheek,

Memories of those she loved and lost,

And the heartbreak she got to keep.

**

Digging deep she sighs at the forgone possibilities,

The dreams and hopes that have all but expired,

She fondles the wins, discards the losses,

Stores the preciousness and pushes away all that made her tired.

**

She stops suddenly, bringing forth a record that’s kept her on the edge,

She wanted, she waited, she tried,

Never completely losing but tethered by the years,

Those ups and downs; laughter spent and tears cried.

**

There’s still a chance but she’s no longer sure,

Does she have the courage to hold her dreams within her hands?

Decades in the making — is the time now right,

Or does the universe have different plans?

**

She refiles the memory and buries it deep,

Why now? Why not then?

She’s learned to accept the inevitable,

If not now, then when?

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.

This is beautiful, and it reminded me of an elderly friend who lost her husband not long ago. That friend's words were "Some things are not meant to be forgotten, even after we pass." I love your poem, because it reminds us to keep the memories, allowing the legacy of someone so precious to live with us forever.

  • Ah that last line, so true. If not now, then when? Loved your poem!
