A Spoonful Short of Ecstasy

Part 1 of a jaded love poem

There must’ve been something in

the water.

Cuz when I looked at you that night

I thought that maybe I

would falter in my sense of what was wrong

and what was right;

it was almost like

my karmic chemistry was altered, when

you laced the air with notes of Hennessy and

charismatic wonder, and

I couldn’t help myself—

I started sinking underneath the surface, I

took the bait and bit into the Eden’s fruit

you offered, and

you watched me there (with a)

popped collar **drinking**

Absolut;

looking dapper in your tailored,

slim-fit suit—

luminescent in the moonlight, you

were like a shark that waited for me in the murky water;

there must’ve been…

there must’ve been something in the water for

this witchcraft to ensue.

Oh,

rendezvous…

was that the first time that you’d

eyed your prey with such pursuit?

You did almost nothing to me, (yet you)

lured me in like this was destiny, and

deja vu.

And I…

I was such a fool—

I was high on something just

a spoonful short of ecstasy (and an)

aphrodisiacal glue—

thinking I could use

jiu-jitsu on your weaponry and not become

just another chickling in your henhouse,

in your coop.

Author's Note: As with many of the poems I've posted recently, I feel that this one may not be finished yet. I've gotten into the habit of labeling everything as "Part I" so that I can come back and add more at a later time. 🤗 (However, I may also make any subsequent parts exclusive to my poetry book...whenever I'm able to make that happen...hehe... 😅)

This poem is part of my "Ghosts of Relationships Past" series, where I reminisce about old love experiences of mine, gone bad. :) ❤️ Follow for more drama!

This is Poem #8 of my personal "Poem-a-Day" challenge. ☺️ Can I keep it up? We shall see. 🫣 So far, I keep falling behind. 🫡 On a positive note, I'm still posting way more than I normally do!

    Yes, it definitely feels like there is more to explore here, but it’s still outstanding with such cool wordplay and dark humour. I’m glad you explained the part one business too. Great idea for a book!

    This is beautiful. I love the idea of adding parts to a story, or in this case the poem. I'd love to see what comes out of part 2 if you ever feel the need to create one.

    Congrats on the Top Story! I loved the different formatting of the lines and how it slowed and sped up the reader creating a very cool push and pull effect. Great job!!

    congratulations on TS. This is amazing how it makes you realize that clothes do not make the man (or woman). They are the illusions that draw us near. Very well done.
