A Sign, If You Need It
a poem

You may wake one hazy morning and realize you have left yourself in a dream. Ghostly, you only half recognize the people and places surrounding. Perhaps you hurry to the mirror to find yourself, even a glimpse, but no reflection meets you on the other side. You might be terrified by this absence and try to convince yourself that this is the dream, after all.
It will only be half true.
This is not a re-awakening, blank slate, rather you are faced with the complicated ecosystem of people and places who have only known your surface like hydrophobic insects on a pond. You may doubt that even you can gauge the water’s depth.
And because you are only halfway there, you may float instead of walk. The point between liminality and here melts into each other so that nothing matters and everything does all at once. You will come to accept, eventually, that you may never recover the part of you lost to the dream.
And then you have a choice: drift like a way stayer who considers home and belonging to be stories in which they were never casted, or reach out your hand to grasp a lifeline.
Perhaps it is a place whose wind breathes the same as you in your deepest slumber. Or it is a song that has remembered the sound of your heart beat when you laugh. Or it is someone who has grown roots long enough to toss you one and says, “Come down here, let me show you how to become.”
You may have opened your eyes to find this. If you need a sign, like I did, here it is: Please stay.

Nice job! I’ve been pondering on a recent dream.
It’s hard to find yourself when you’re lost in a dream.
Your words struck a cord with me. Your poetry and other writing is a good place to stay a while.
